A quick visit to the hive

Sunday afternoon I made a quick visit to the hive. It was my first solo visit, and I spent some time just watching and listening as the ladies worked. I still have not found the queen, but everyone seems pretty content so I'll go on assuming she's in there, somewhere.

I decided to stop refilling the sugar water (bee food), as there is plenty of pollen and nectar available outside the hive. I left the sugar water container in the hive, so they can continue to feed from it, but I won't refill it as it gets low.

I inspected each frame and was quite impressed with the progress the workers have made on the 2 center frames. There is a significant amount of comb, and several of the cells are filled with pollen (yellow) and brood (I assume that's what the darker ones are).

Everyone seems happy, healthy and busy. Next weekend I would like to find the queen!

  1. Glad to know everything is going well!

I thought about you the other day when a bee flew into our screen door. I was scared at first and then I thought, "No, Becca is friends with the bees now, there is no reason to be afraid!"

What happens when you find the queen, and when can we expect to sample your product?!

  2. Hopefully it was a honey bee, not a bumble been, that flew into your screen door. I don't know what the deal is with bumble bees, but they are big, hairy, and kind of freak me out.

I'm not sure what will happen when I find the queen... hmm. I'm really excited to see her though. Right now I imagine her like the Wizard of Oz, and I'm ready to look behind the curtain!
